Gibson Guitar of the Month: 2008

Gibsons Guitar of the Month December: SG Diablo (Silver)

The new SG Diablo captures the essence of a classic design, and takes it one step further. Like the Gibson SG Standard in 1961, the new SG Diablo sets a precedent for style, function and design. The SG Diablo is carved to accent the contour and gives the guitar a three dimensional appearance. The new SG Diablo also takes the SG's 24 3/4 inch scale length mahogany neck and adds two additional frets, allowing even higher register of notes from a guitar already known for its searing lead playing capacity. Available only in a Silver Metallic finish with matching headstock, a fine ending for 2008.

Gibsons Guitar of the Month October: The Reverse Explorer

The world wasn't quite ready for the Gibson Explorer in 1958, as evidenced by production numbers that strained to meet 100 units. Now 50 years later those same models are some of the most prized collectible guitars in the world, and Gibson USA honors the legacy of this legendary electric guitar by introducing the 50-Year Commemorative Gibson Explorer. The retro-style, solid mahogany body of this Guitar of the Month for October 2008 is as angular and asymmetrical today as it was the first day it left Gibson's Kalamazoo plant in 1958. Added, however, is a AA figured maple top with beveled edges, and a hotter-than-hell Brimstone Burst finish all exclusive features of this limited edition Explorer guitar. The headstock's unique Gibson logo was recently found in a warehouse, among some old drawings belonging to Gibson President Ted McCarty.

Gibson Guitar of the Month September: The Reverse Explorer

Gibson USA turns the guitar world upside down again by introducing the new limited edition Reverse Explorer. The engineers at Gibson USA have flipped the body of one their most iconic guitars. The Reverse Explorer’s mahogany body is now inverted so that the small horn is on the upper bass-side bout extending upward, while the larger horn is now positioned on the lower treble-side bout pointing downward. Highlighting the unique body outline is a carbon fiber like pickguard shaped like a lightning bolt, extending the entire length of the body. The new Reverse Explorer also sports the rare art deco style Gibson logo. The headstock is a equipped with Steinberger Gearless Tuners for unparalleled tuning accuracy. In the neck position is Gibson’s ’57 Classic, with a ’57 Classic Plus in the bridge. The pole pieces for both pickups are concealed by pickup covers that are copper-plated and powder-coated, designed just for the Reverse Explorer. The new Reverse Explorer only in an Antique Walnut finish. Like all Guitars of the Month, production is limited to just 1,000 guitars.

Gibson Guitar of the Month March: 50-Year Commemorative Flying V

Over the weekend Gibson officially unveiled the latest addition to their 2008 Guitar Of The Month series–– the 50-year Commemorative Flying V. Marking a full half-century since the first batch of Flying V’s left Gibson’s Kalamazoo, Michigan facilities in 1958 (and immediately tanked in the marketplace,) this 50th Anniversary Flying V is fully decked out in a custom ‘Brimstone Burst’ finish, gold hardware, and mother-of-pearl split block inlays. The guitar eschews its early predecessor’s Korina wood body for solid mahogany, and is topped-off with a beveled-edge AA maple top. A new art deco-styled Gibson logo graces the headstock (apparently culled from the drawings of Ted McCarty,) and the 22-fret ebony fretboard is dressed with gold fretwire. Other standout features include a set of Steinberger Gearless Tuners––with a 40:1 tuning ratio––a ‘57 Classic humbucker at the neck, ‘57 Classic Plus humbucker at the bridge, single Volume & Tone controls, and a “50-Year Commemorative neck profile”––basically a hybrid of Gibson’s ’60s Slim-Taper and ’50s Rounded Contour profiles. The guitar will ship with a custom Guitar of the Month case, and will be produced in a limited run of just 1,000 instruments.

Gibson Guitar of the Month February: SG Diablo

Gibson USA is proud to introduce the 2008 Guitar of the Month series, and to kick things off in style, we're offering you the chance to win a smokin' hot SG Diablo in Metallic Red. Following the success of last year's Guitar of the Week series, Gibson's Guitar of the Month will debut an original, limited edition electric each month. There will be only 1,000 of each model made, and if this year's anything like last year, they'll go on to become instant Gibson classics. The Diablo is leading the way. The first in the Guitar of the Month series, the SG Diablo has the beloved features of the original SG, a carved top and rosewood fingerboard, but gets a modern update with two extra frets, a pair of Burstbucker pickups, and a gleaming Metallic Red finish with a headstock to match. Also helping to meet the demands of the modern performer, the tone and volume controls have been streamlined so that there is just one of each, and moved closer to the bridge pickup for easy access.
